Rutherford County commissioners asks sheriff to resign

Print | Front Page | Email this story

MURFREESBORO (AP) - The Rutherford County Commission has approved a resolution asking Sheriff Robert Arnold to resign.

Local news outlets report that the commission passed the resolution unanimously Thursday. It comes after Arnold, his uncle and his chief of accounting and administration were accused of illegally profiting off inmates through the sale of electronic cigarettes.

Commissioner Robert Peay Jr. says Arnold has not been fulfilling his duties in office and the resolution's request is fair.

The commission discussed the possibility of filing an ouster lawsuit, but did not vote on it.

Arnold, his uncle John Vanderveer, and the Sheriff's Office chief of accounting and administration Joe Russell all face federal charges including conspiracy, extortion and tampering with evidence.

Their trial is set for Aug. 2 in Nashville.
