Report: Probation office working with immigration agency

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) — A report that probation officers in Nashville, Tennessee are working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement is leading to concern among activists and city leaders.

WSMV-TV reported on Tuesday that it requested emails between Nashville probation officers and a local ICE agent and found the local agency working with the federal one by passing along information such as addresses and phone numbers.

The Tennessean reports that Nashville Mayor David Briley called on Thursday for an investigation and audit of the General Sessions Probation Department. He says the reported actions of the agency are "absolutely unacceptable."

Administrator Warner Hassell oversees the probation office and said in a statement that releasing requested information "is consistent with applicable state and federal laws."

Mary Kathryn Harcombe with Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition says the cooperation creates distrust of the legal system.
